PRESS RELEASE FOR TUESDAY, 5TH OF JUNE 2018.
A MEETING WITH THE DEPUTY PROVOST ACADEMIC, DR. MRS MOLAGUN.
Due to the Temporary Ban on the sales of handbooks by the Provost of the College, Majority of the students have been agitating that, they have nothing to read or study further after the lecturer's explanation in class, some laid some complaint that, some lecturers are not teaching them effectively and the second option which is the handbook provide by such lecturer have been put to a halt following the Provost order.
The students hereby declare their aims to organise a peaceful protest to know how far the handbook review will take because 2nd semester examination is fast approaching, but this protest was curbed by individual departmental reps which results to the meeting with the Deputy Provost Academic Dr. Mrs. Molagun this afternoon.
The meeting which lasted about 45 minutes, the meeting comprise almost all representative from each school (AGRIC, business education, English, French, Yoruba, ecce, phe, social studies, iss, maths, computer etc) the representatives tabled their complaints, and they were well received by the deputy provost, the questions asked includes : why the sales of handbooks were temporarily suspended, when it's sales will commence o has it been banned permanently, when the exam is starting etc..
The deputy provost acknowledged the representatives for their good conduct and cooperation, she said the provost is a unionist and he's ready to do things that will make life easier and better for the students, she said, the provost is not stopping the sales of handbooks at all, she said, the provost has been around and has examined most of the books, and he has found out that some are not worth the price, the contents that some entails are full of grammatical errors and blunders, and such books are nothing but a stain on the college white garment.. She said the provost has ordered her to write to each department that each lecturer is to submit his/her book with a letter stating the price of the book, she also said a panel has been formed, whose aim is just to check and balance the books, based on price, relevance, quality, quantity etc..but these committee hasn't come for the submitted books for almost a week, and were just coming for it yesterday after disturbing them, we were lucky to witness the submission of Two books from English language department and was taken to the committee ASAP,
She said after the committee report, corrections would be made and new prices would be sent back to each lecturer, she also said that the students should be calm and be of good conduct, she said the exam is still a long way to go, and that lecture will commence for 13 weeks, and would be dully completed, that is exams would be by July ending, she also promised to orientate the students if there could be a fixed date and arranged venue where she can meet them all.
Also, she made us understand that, starting from next semester, the provost wants all departmental handbooks to be compiled in a single booklet, and would either be annually or each semester, and would be sold at affordable prices, so there wouldn't be individual handbooks anymore.
She also enjoined the students not to keep silent to any extortion, harassment, illegal activities going on in the campus to the provost or her own office and promised such report would be looked into properly.
The minute of the meeting was written down and the deputy provost promised to deliver it to the provost ASAP, they were told to check back on Friday to know how far the committee has gone, also said her office is always open for any student who needs to consult her because she's our mother.
So we urge all students to remain calm and patient for even if the SUG body isn't ready to fight for your right, Your departmental representatives are ready to do that for you, keep your money with you till the approval for the sales with new prices are given..
