VCs, ASUU reject 120 cut-off mark for varsity admission

SOME Vice-Chancellors and the Academic Staff Union of Universities have rejected the decision of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board to peg admission cut-off mark at 120 for universities and 100 for polytechnics, and colleges of education.

ASUU said the action, which it described as a “sad policy decision,” was in tandem “with the dream of the present government to destroy public universities in the country.” Most of the vice-chancellors our correspondents interviewed on the issue maintained that they would not lower admission standards in their respective varsities.

The vice-chancellors stated that the decision would add no value to the nation’s university system. For instance, in a statement issued by the Vice-Chancellor, University of Ibadan, Prof. Idowu Olayinka, on the issue and released by his Media Assistant, Mr. Sunday Saanu, on Thursday, the premier university stated that it would never admit any candidate that scored 120 in the UTME.

Protesting students causing gridlock Benue State has been thrown into mourning following the killing of a final year Geography student from the State University in Mukurdi. Hundreds of protesting students took to the streets demanding the arrest and prosecution of those behind the killing.The students are also demanding the intervention of the State House of Assembly in providing legislation to curb such killings in future.The protest caused heavy gridlock along the Lafia- Makurdi-Otukpo and the Makurdi-Gboko federal highways for over three hours.Meanwhile, efforts by security agencies to clear the road were rebuffed by the students, demanding all herdsmen leave the state for good.Protesting university students reacting to the continuous herdsmen attacks on Benue farmers, a youth activist while providing statistics of those killed between 2013 and 2015, called on president Muhammadu Buhari and the international community to halt the wanton killing once and for all.The protest is the second just within the week as Tiv youths gathered in Abuja, to demand action from the seat of power at the Federal level, however more needs to be seen if the protest caught the attention of the President to warrant immediate solution.Governor of Benue State, Samuel OrtomThe governorSamuel Ortom, had called on the Federal Government to do more to stop the attacks by herdsmen across the country.The governor, who led the State Security Council to the killing fields in Logo and Buruku local council, lamented over the renewed attacks witnessed in the region.“There must be a solution, the Federal Government must come and collaborate with the state to solve this problem.But the Commissioner of Police, Bashir Makama, on the other hand, ordered his men to deal with anyone bearing arms illegally.Benue State Commissioner of Police, Bashir Makama“Anybody that is seen with arms should be brought down. Jamb Registrar Ishaq Oloyede Lists Fresh 8 Conditions Institutions Must Stick To In Admitting Students

Registrar of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board, JAMB, Ishaq Oloyede on Friday said the agency will ensure candidates are not mistreated by their preferred universities.


He also listed eight conditions that tertiary institutions must follow when admitting students.
Mr. Oloyede spoke at Baze University, Jabi, Abuja at the first Extraordinary Technical Committee meeting on 2016 Admissions to First Choice Institutions.

He said the only difference in this year’s admission process is the policy that there should be no written post-UTME test.
Mr. Oloyede insisted that as a referee, his agency would not allow arbitrariness by institutions in the admission process.

“JAMB will resist such arbitrariness and illegal introduction of extraneous factors which were not contained in the published advertisement made available to the candidates.

“We should be able to explain to every Nigerian child who had applied for admission, why s/he was not admitted into his/her institution of choice,” he said.

According to him, the right of Senate or Academic Board of each institution on admissions of candidates is subject to the following conditions-

a. Guidelines stipulated by proprietors of the institutions

b. 60:40 (Science/Art) ratio for conventional universities
c. 80:20 (Science/Art) ratio for non-conventional universities

d. 70:30 (Technology/Non-technology) ratio for National Diploma Awarding Institutions

e. Use of 2016 JAMB, UTME results’ print-out for all candidates

f. Adherence to published subject combinations of various courses as specified by the Senate/Academic Board and included in the 2016 JAMB brochure
g. Adherence to the 2016 Admissions quota as prescribed by the Regulatory Bodies (NUC, NBTE, NCCE)
h. (For Federal universities) The quota stipulated by the Federal Executive Council concerning Merit, Catchment and Educationally less developed states, should be complied with.


Mr. Oloyede stated that the deadline for approved institutions’ admission panels was still November 30, 2016.

He also said the second Technical Committee Meeting would take place at Alvan Ikoku Federal College of Education, Owerri, Imo state on November 14, 2016.

JAMB Sets New Deadline For Admission Into Universities And Polytechnics

Students seeking admission into tertiary institutions in Nigeria have been given a lifeline until Wednesday, November 30, 2016.

According to information released by Professor Ishaq Oloyede, the registrar of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) stated on Friday, September 16, that all admissions to universities, polytechnics and colleges of education should end at the stipulated time.
Speaking at the University of Abuja, venue of an Extra-Ordinary Technical Committee Meeting on 2016 Admissions to First Choice Institutions, the JAMB boss noted that the board was ready to attend to authentic requests of everyone involved in ensuring the efficiency of the examination body. While informing that other admission processes remain intact, the registrar explained that there should be no post Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) test and that institutions which were yet to complete their requirements for the 2017 brochure to do so.

The NECO Registrar On Friday announced the result statistics and performances of each states,Ekiti state led with the best results, followed by Edo state while Abia and Kogi states tied for the third spot.

“An analysis of the result across the 36 states of the federation and the Federal Capital Territory indicated that Ekiti State topped all others with 96.485 of its candidates that sat for the examination coming out victorious. Edo state was second with 96.31% while Abia and Kogi were joint third,” Uwakwe explained.
